What do bald patches feel like with scalp ringworm?

Most people with Scalp Ringworm notice bald patches with itch and flaky scale. Hairs may break close to the scalp, leaving short stubble or dark dots. The skin can feel rough, sore or warm, and inflammation may cause swollen areas or small pus-filled bumps. A more severe inflammatory lump can be tender and may ooze.

Scalp ringworm is a fungal infection, not a sign of poor hygiene. It can spread through close contact or shared combs, brushes, hats and bedding, so prompt diagnosis helps protect household members.

Arrange medical assessment rather than relying on a scalp cream alone; infection in hair follicles usually needs treatment selected for the scalp. Do not share hair tools, washcloths, hats or pillows, and clean or replace items advised by your clinician. Avoid scratching and tell close contacts if screening or advice is recommended.

Seek prompt care for painful swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or a soft tender lump. Children, people with reduced immunity and anyone with rapidly increasing hair loss should be assessed promptly. Urgent review is needed if swelling affects the face or you feel significantly unwell.
