What does ankle pain feel like with ankle fracture?

A fracture may cause sharp pain at the moment of injury, followed by a strong ache or throbbing around the ankle. Pressing over a particular bone can be very tender. Swelling and bruising may develop, while the ankle can feel stiff or unstable. Pain alone cannot show whether a bone is broken; a clinician may need to examine the ankle and arrange imaging.

Avoid walking on the injured side if doing so increases pain. Keep the ankle still in a comfortable position, raise it, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Do not try to straighten an ankle that looks out of place. Arrange prompt medical assessment after a significant twist, fall, or direct blow.

Seek emergency help if the ankle is visibly deformed, a bone is exposed, the foot becomes cold or pale, or numbness and weakness appear. Urgent assessment is also needed when pain is severe, swelling is rapidly increasing, or you cannot move your toes normally.

Ask which bone or joint is involved, whether imaging is needed, how much weight you may place on the foot, and what support or follow-up will help recovery.
