What does abdominal swelling feel like with primary peritoneal cancer?

The abdomen may gradually look larger and feel stretched, firm, heavy, or uncomfortable. Fluid collecting around the abdominal organs can create pressure, reduce appetite, and cause early fullness during meals. Some people notice pelvic discomfort, altered bowel movements, nausea, or breathlessness when pressure affects movement of the diaphragm. The swelling may make sitting, bending, or lying down less comfortable. Similar symptoms can occur with digestive, liver, heart, or other conditions, so the feeling alone cannot show what is causing it.

Arrange medical review for swelling that is new, persistent, or increasing. Note the change over time and record pain, appetite, bowel function, nausea, breathing, and how much you are able to drink. Smaller meals and comfortable clothing may reduce pressure while you wait for advice. A clinician may examine you and consider imaging, blood tests, or testing of abdominal fluid. Do not attempt home drainage or take fluid-removing medicines unless prescribed for you.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, significant breathing difficulty, a suddenly tense abdomen, fever with a very unwell feeling, or inability to pass urine. Contact your oncology team promptly if swelling is worsening, eating and drinking are becoming difficult, or you are much less active than usual. These changes may require prompt assessment and symptom relief.

Ask whether fluid may be contributing to the swelling, which tests are suitable, and whether drainage or another treatment could ease pressure. Ask what to monitor at home, which symptoms need same-day help, and who to call between appointments.
