What causes skin redness?

Redness reflects increased blood flow or irritation in the skin, but its pattern matters. Sunburn often follows recent ultraviolet exposure. Contact Dermatitis may appear where a product, metal, plant, or chemical touched the skin. Heat Rash can cause small itchy bumps in sweaty areas. Psoriasis may produce recurring well-defined red plaques. Cellulitis is a skin infection that can cause an area to become painful, warm, swollen, and progressively larger.

Move away from heat, rinse off a suspected irritant, and use a cool compress for short periods. Avoid rubbing, exfoliating, fragranced products, and unadvised steroid creams on broken or infected skin. Note whether the redness blanches with gentle pressure, feels warm, is itchy or painful, and how quickly it changes. A dermatologist may discuss options such as Topical Corticosteroids or IPL Photofacial for selected causes after diagnosis.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly spreading redness, marked warmth or swelling, severe pain, fever, red streaks, pus, or feeling very unwell. Emergency help is needed with facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering over a large area, or eye involvement. Arrange assessment for redness that keeps returning or does not improve after the suspected trigger is removed.
