Short answer

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is caused by increased or displaced melanin after inflammation, such as acne, dermatitis, bites, burns or picking.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main process
Extra or displaced melanin after inflammation
Typical appearance
Flat brown, grey or darker marks
Worsening factors
Sun exposure, rubbing and repeated flares

How dark marks form

When skin is inflamed, chemical signals can stimulate pigment-producing cells. Melanin may be made in greater amounts or released into deeper layers as injured cells break down. The result is a flat brown, grey or darker patch at the site of a healed spot. Acne and atopic dermatitis are common triggers, but insect bites, scratches, burns and cosmetic irritation can also leave marks.

The color may become more noticeable after ultraviolet or visible-light exposure, and repeated rubbing or a fresh flare can deepen it. Darker marks do not mean the original inflammation is still active; the underlying process may have settled while pigment remains in the skin.

Steps that support fading

Control the original inflammation and avoid picking, friction and products that sting. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen consistently and use protective clothing when practical. A gentle cleanser and moisturizer help the barrier tolerate treatment. A dermatologist may recommend a pigment-targeting ingredient or procedure after checking the cause and your skin tone; introducing strong products too quickly can create irritation and more pigment.

When to get a skin assessment

Arrange a review when darkening is spreading without a clear inflammatory trigger, the area is itchy or painful, new rashes keep appearing, or the mark has an unusual raised or changing quality. Seek care for an inflamed wound with warmth, pus or fever. Professional assessment is especially useful when the appearance could represent active dermatitis, acne or another pigment condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what triggered the pigment, whether active acne or dermatitis needs treatment, which light protection is appropriate, and which fading option is least likely to irritate your skin.

Questions people ask

Does post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation mean the skin is still inflamed?

Not always. Pigment can remain after the original inflammation has settled, although new flares can add more marks.

Can sunscreen help dark marks fade?

Consistent light protection can reduce further darkening and helps other treatments work under more stable conditions.
