What causes inability to bear weight?
Short answer
Inability to bear weight can result from a fracture, tendon rupture, joint infection, severe sprain, or intense inflammation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common clues
- Injury mechanism, swelling, bruising, deformity, and pain location
- First step
- Avoid weight-bearing until the cause is assessed
What it may mean
A fall, twist, direct blow, or sudden force may injure bone, ligament, cartilage, or tendon. An ankle or tibial plateau fracture can make standing unsafe; a hip fracture may cause groin or thigh pain and difficulty moving the leg. A torn Achilles tendon can impair push-off and walking. A joint infection may cause marked pain with movement, swelling, heat, and feeling unwell. The location of pain, how the injury happened, swelling, bruising, and whether the leg looks shortened or deformed help guide assessment.
What to do now
Stop weight-bearing and use support from another person or crutches if available. Keep the limb in a comfortable position, avoid forceful stretching or massage, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if swelling followed an injury. Do not drive yourself if severe pain or a leg injury makes control difficult. A clinician may examine the joint and arrange imaging. A walking boot may be recommended for selected injuries, but it should not replace assessment.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical assessment if you cannot take a few steps after an injury, the limb is visibly deformed, pain is severe, swelling developed quickly, or the foot is numb, pale, or cold. Go urgently for inability to bear weight with fever, a hot swollen joint, or rapidly worsening pain because infection needs prompt treatment. An unexplained inability to walk also deserves same-day clinical advice.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which structure may be injured, whether an X-ray or other scan is needed, how much weight is safe, and which warning signs should bring you back. Ask how to protect the limb while waiting and when gentle movement or rehabilitation can begin.

Questions people ask
Can a sprain stop me from walking?
Yes. A severe sprain can cause pain and swelling that make weight-bearing difficult, though a fracture may feel similar and should be considered after significant trauma.
Is inability to bear weight an emergency?
It can be. Urgent assessment is needed with deformity, severe or sudden swelling, numbness, a cold foot, fever, or a hot painful joint.
