What causes hip clicking and snapping?

Short answer
Hip clicking and snapping can come from a tendon shifting over bone, joint surface irritation, or a labral problem inside the hip.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How hip clicking happens
A click felt at the front or outside of the hip may occur when a tight tendon moves across a bony prominence during walking, rising, or lifting the knee. This pattern is often called snapping hip syndrome. A deep click with catching, reduced movement, or groin pain can reflect irritation within the joint, including hip impingement or a labral tear.
The sound alone does not identify the cause. Pain, locking, giving way, a recent injury, and the movement that triggers the sensation provide more useful clues.
What to do next
Note whether the click is painful, where it is located, and which movements bring it on. Temporarily reduce repeated deep squats, forceful hip flexion, or the activity that provokes symptoms. Gentle mobility and strengthening under physiotherapy guidance can improve control and reduce tendon overload.
A clinician may assess hip range, muscle strength, walking pattern, and joint signs. Imaging is considered when symptoms suggest an internal hip problem or do not improve with an appropriate exercise plan.
When to seek care
Book an assessment when clicking is painful, persistent, or associated with catching, stiffness, weakness, or reduced activity. Seek urgent care after a fall or forceful injury if you cannot bear weight, the hip looks deformed, or severe pain begins suddenly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the sound seems to come from a tendon or the joint, which movements to avoid temporarily, and whether your examination suggests hip impingement, a labral tear, or snapping hip syndrome.

Questions people ask
Is painless hip clicking harmful?
Painless clicking without stiffness or loss of function is often less concerning, but a new or changing pattern deserves assessment if it persists.
Should I stop exercising?
Avoid the specific movement that causes pain, but maintain comfortable activity and seek advice for a suitable progression.
