What causes hand numbness?

Numbness in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger may occur when the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, as in carpal tunnel syndrome. Numbness in the little finger and the adjacent side of the ring finger can reflect pressure on the ulnar nerve at the elbow, known as cubital tunnel syndrome.

Neck nerve irritation, called cervical radiculopathy, may cause symptoms that travel from the neck or shoulder into the arm and hand. Thoracic outlet syndrome can affect nerves or blood vessels near the neck and upper chest. Symptoms may be intermittent or constant and may coexist with weakness or clumsiness.

Notice which fingers are affected, whether symptoms wake you at night, and whether wrist, elbow, neck, or shoulder positions bring them on. Avoid prolonged pressure on the elbow or tightly bent wrists, and take regular movement breaks from repetitive tasks.

A clinician can test sensation, strength, reflexes, and nerve pathways. Treatment depends on the site and cause; persistent wrist nerve compression may sometimes be treated with carpal tunnel release after appropriate assessment.

Arrange medical assessment for persistent, worsening, or recurrent numbness, especially with dropping objects or hand weakness. Seek emergency help for sudden numbness with facial drooping, speech difficulty, severe weakness, chest pain, or a cold, pale, or blue hand.
