What Causes Erythrasma?

The infection often appears in the groin, armpits, under the breasts, or between the toes. Sweat, humidity, friction, and limited airflow can soften the outer skin and create conditions that support bacterial growth. The patches may be brown, pink, or reddish-brown with fine scaling and mild itch or burning. The colour can be more noticeable than the discomfort.

Erythrasma can resemble fungal infection, eczema, or contact irritation. A clinician may examine the pattern and use a special light or a skin sample when the diagnosis is uncertain. The condition is not a sign that someone is dirty; it reflects bacteria, moisture, and the local skin environment.

A clinician may recommend a topical or oral antibiotic, depending on the location and extent of the infection. Wash gently, dry skin folds carefully, change damp clothing, and choose breathable fabrics. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, which can worsen irritation. Treating ongoing sweating or friction may reduce the chance of recurrence, but persistent discolouration should be reviewed rather than treated with random creams.

Arrange an appointment if a fold rash persists, spreads, becomes painful, develops drainage, or does not improve with an appropriate treatment. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly increasing warmth or swelling, or a tender open area, because these features may indicate a deeper infection.
