What causes difficulty concentrating?

Short answer

Difficulty concentrating can result from poor sleep, stress, anxiety, low mood, attention differences, anaemia, medicines, or other health conditions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why focus can change

Sleep loss and insomnia reduce the mental energy available for reading, planning, and remembering instructions. Obstructive sleep apnoea can interrupt sleep with repeated breathing problems. Ongoing worry may keep attention fixed on possible threats, while depression can bring slowed thinking, low motivation, and reduced interest.

Burnout may make routine tasks feel unusually effortful after prolonged demands and limited recovery. ADHD can affect sustained attention, organisation, and impulse control from an earlier stage of life, although adults may recognise it only later. Iron deficiency anaemia can contribute to tiredness and reduced mental sharpness. New symptoms can also follow illness, pain, medication changes, alcohol, or hormonal and metabolic problems.

Steps that may help

Protect a regular sleep schedule, take short breaks, and work on one clearly defined task at a time. Keep water and nourishing meals available, reduce distracting notifications, and write down appointments or instructions. Record when focus worsens, how you slept, mood changes, headaches, and any new medicine.

Book a medical review if the problem continues, affects work or study, or is a clear change from your usual function. Assessment may include a medication review, mood and sleep questions, examination, or blood tests when symptoms suggest anaemia or another medical cause.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for sudden confusion or difficulty speaking, one-sided weakness, a severe new headache, fainting, chest pain, or trouble breathing. Arrange prompt care for rapidly worsening concentration, unsafe mistakes, or symptoms appearing after a head injury.

Questions for your doctor

Could sleep, mood, anxiety, attention differences, anaemia, or a medicine explain this change? What details should I track? Would a sleep, mental-health, or blood assessment be useful?
