What Causes Dark Elbows and Knees?

Short answer
Dark elbows and knees can develop from repeated pressure, friction, dryness, thickened skin, sun exposure, or pigment left after inflammation or injury.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Skin response
- Inflammation can leave pigment behind after the original problem settles
Why these areas darken
Elbows and knees are exposed to bending, contact, and pressure. Repeated leaning, kneeling, rubbing, or rough scrubbing can thicken the outer skin and make it look darker. Dryness can emphasise texture and colour. If a rash, scrape, bite, or irritation heals in the area, the skin may retain extra pigment; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Colour can also be influenced by natural skin tone and sun exposure. Darkening that is sudden, widespread, velvety, itchy, scaly, or associated with other symptoms should not be assumed to be simple dryness.
Gentle care at home
Apply a plain moisturiser regularly, especially after bathing, and reduce direct pressure where practical. Use gentle cleansing and stop abrasive scrubs, stiff brushes, and irritating lightening mixtures. Cover exposed skin from strong sun. If the area remains rough or the colour follows a rash, a dermatologist can recommend a suitable exfoliating or pigment-focused treatment after identifying the cause.
When to seek care
Book an assessment if the change is rapidly progressing, appears in several body areas, becomes thick or velvety, or comes with pain, swelling, persistent itch, scaling, or a rash. Seek care sooner when darkening follows a medication change or occurs alongside other new symptoms. Do not delay review for a changing lesion or a non-healing sore.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether friction, eczema, a healed inflammation, or another skin condition is responsible; which moisturiser or active treatment suits your skin; and how to avoid worsening pigment through irritation.
