What causes ankle swelling?

Short answer
Ankle swelling can result from a sprain, fracture, arthritis, gout, or inflammation after overuse.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the swelling may mean
Swelling soon after a twist commonly reflects an ankle sprain, when stretched ligaments trigger inflammation. After a hard impact or fall, swelling with tenderness and difficulty bearing weight can occur with an ankle fracture. Ankle osteoarthritis may produce recurring swelling, stiffness, and discomfort after activity. Gout can cause a sudden, intensely painful, hot, and swollen joint. Swelling may also be influenced by prolonged standing, a new activity, or irritation of nearby tissues.
Notice whether one ankle or both are affected, how quickly the swelling appeared, and whether the skin is warm or red. [Ankle Swelling](/symptoms/ankle-swelling/) explains the symptom in more detail.
What to do now
Rest from the activity that provoked symptoms, elevate the ankle when resting, and choose roomy supportive footwear. Gentle movement can prevent stiffness if it does not increase pain. Do not massage a newly injured, very hot, or markedly tender area until the cause is clearer. A healthcare professional can assess the joint and decide whether imaging or other tests are needed.
When to seek care
Get urgent assessment for severe pain, a visible change in shape, inability to bear weight, spreading redness, fever, or an ankle that becomes suddenly hot and swollen. Arrange care when swelling does not settle, repeatedly returns, or follows an injury that limits normal walking.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be a ligament injury, fracture, arthritis, or gout? Would imaging help? Should I use compression or a brace? Which movements are safe while the swelling settles?
