What are the treatment options for sebaceous hyperplasia?

Sebaceous hyperplasia appears as small, skin-coloured or yellowish bumps caused by enlarged oil glands. They are often harmless, so observation is reasonable when they are not bothersome. A clinician should assess a new, changing or unusual bump before cosmetic treatment because other skin lesions can look similar.

Electrosurgery uses controlled electrical energy to treat individual lesions. CO2 laser resurfacing removes or reshapes a very small area of surface skin and may be considered when several lesions or a particular skin texture need attention. The procedure selected depends on lesion size, number, location and your tendency to form raised scars.

Start with a skin assessment and discuss whether the goal is to flatten selected bumps or improve a wider area.
