What are the treatment options for scapular dyskinesis?

Short answer
Treatment for scapular dyskinesis usually focuses on physiotherapy, movement retraining and progressive exercises for the shoulder blade, trunk and arm.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the movement change
Scapular dyskinesis means the shoulder blade does not move or rest in its usual coordinated pattern during arm movement. It may be linked with weakness, stiffness, pain, posture, altered nerve function or an underlying shoulder problem. Assessment looks at the neck, shoulder, ribs and arm, not only the visible edge of the shoulder blade.
How rehabilitation works
Physiotherapy may address pain and stiffness before building control. A programme can include gentle range-of-motion work, strengthening of the shoulder-blade muscles, rotator cuff and trunk, and practice of reaching or lifting with better coordination. Exercise Therapy is progressed from controlled movements to tasks relevant to work, sport or home life. Avoid repeatedly forcing painful overhead motion, but do not keep the shoulder completely still unless advised.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment when winging, weakness or pain persists, limits reaching, or follows an injury. Seek prompt care for sudden inability to lift the arm, a visibly deformed shoulder, marked swelling, fever, new numbness or weakness in the hand, or severe pain after trauma.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be altering the movement, which exercises should come first, how to modify work or sport, and what change would show that rehabilitation is progressing.

Questions people ask
Is surgery usually the first treatment?
Rehabilitation and treatment of the contributing problem are commonly considered before an operation, depending on the cause.
Should I stop all shoulder exercise?
Usually, activity is modified rather than stopped completely; painful or aggravating movements should be reviewed with a clinician.
