What are the treatment options for rectal cancer?

The team reviews biopsy findings and scans to understand how far the cancer has grown, where it sits in the rectum and whether nearby structures or other organs are involved. These details influence whether treatment starts with chemotherapy or radiotherapy before surgery, or whether surgery is the first main treatment.

Chemotherapy before surgery can treat cancer cells throughout the body and may help reduce the tumour. Radiotherapy targets the pelvic area and can be given before or after an operation in selected plans. Surgery removes the tumour with a margin of nearby tissue; the surgeon also considers how the bowel can be joined safely.

Ask the colorectal and oncology team to explain the proposed sequence, the aim of each treatment, and how appointments will be coordinated. Tell them about bowel symptoms, medicines, other illnesses, nutrition and your priorities for bowel function and daily life.

A rectal resection may involve removing part of the rectum and reconnecting the bowel when possible. A stoma creates an opening on the abdomen for stool to leave the body; it may be temporary or long-term depending on the operation and healing. A stoma nurse can explain appliances, skin care and practical support.

Contact your treatment team promptly for heavy rectal bleeding, worsening abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, inability to pass stool or gas, fever, or rapidly increasing pain. After an operation, new breathlessness, chest pain, confusion or a wound that becomes hot and increasingly painful needs urgent assessment.
