Short answer

Treatment for quadriceps tendon rupture depends on tear severity and function, and may involve tendon repair surgery followed by structured rehabilitation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Key assessment
Tear extent and ability to actively straighten the knee
After repair
Protection is followed by staged rehabilitation

How the plan is decided

The quadriceps tendon connects the thigh muscles to the kneecap and helps straighten the knee. A complete rupture can make straight-leg lifting or active knee extension difficult. Examination and imaging help clarify whether the tendon is fully or partly torn, where it is injured and how much function remains. A partial tear with preserved extension may sometimes be managed with bracing, activity restriction and close review.

A complete tear or a partial tear with major functional loss may need tendon repair surgery to restore continuity. After repair, the knee is protected while the tendon heals, then movement and strength are advanced in stages. The exact brace settings, weight-bearing instructions and exercise timing must come from the treating surgeon and rehabilitation team.

Protecting the knee

Until assessed, avoid forceful bending, jumping and pushing through a weak knee. Use the support and walking method prescribed, and do not drive or return to sport until your clinician confirms that control is adequate. After surgery, attend post-operative rehabilitation and report increasing wound drainage, calf swelling, new numbness or pain that is difficult to control. Progress is guided by healing and knee control rather than by a fixed timetable.

When urgent assessment is needed

Seek prompt assessment after a sudden pop followed by loss of knee extension, a deep knee deformity or inability to walk safely. After surgery, urgent help is needed for chest pain, breathlessness, a very swollen painful calf, fever, spreading redness or wound discharge. Do not wait for a routine appointment when these symptoms appear.

Questions for your doctor

Is my tear partial or complete, and how is that confirmed? Can my current knee extension be restored without surgery? If repair is advised, what protection and rehabilitation will I need? When can I safely walk, work or drive?

Questions people ask

Does every quadriceps tendon tear need surgery?

No. Some partial tears with useful knee extension may be treated without surgery, while complete tears or major functional loss often require specialist discussion of repair.

Why is rehabilitation staged?

The healing tendon needs protection before movement, loading and strength work can be increased safely.
