What are the treatment options for pityriasis alba?

Short answer
Treatment options for pityriasis alba include regular emollient therapy, sun protection, and a short prescribed course of topical corticosteroid when inflammation or itching is present.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What pityriasis alba means
Pityriasis alba is a common, non-contagious skin condition that produces lighter patches with fine dryness or scaling. It is often noticed on the cheeks, around the mouth, or on the arms. The colour difference can look stronger after tanning because nearby skin darkens while the patch does not. It is not the same as a fungal infection, and rubbing or bleaching the area can make irritation more noticeable.
What you can do
Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser several times through the day, particularly after washing, to soften scale and support the skin barrier. An [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) plan may be enough when dryness is the main issue. Use shade, protective clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin so contrast is less obvious. If redness, itch, or roughness persists, a clinician may prescribe [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) for carefully limited use. Do not use a steroid cream on a child without advice about its strength, amount, and duration.
When to seek care
Arrange a skin assessment if patches spread quickly, become sharply white, develop marked scale, or do not fit the usual pattern. Seek prompt advice for pain, swelling, oozing, crusting, or significant itch. A clinician can check whether another cause of light or scaly patches needs different treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be pityriasis alba or another cause of pale patches? Which moisturiser is suitable for this skin? If a steroid is needed, where should it be applied and for how long? How should sun protection be adjusted for the affected areas?
