What are the treatment options for pet allergy?

Pet allergy is usually triggered by proteins found in skin flakes, saliva or urine rather than by fur itself. Symptoms may include sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, itchy eyes, cough or wheezing. Treatment aims to lower the amount of allergen around you and calm the inflammation it causes.

A clinician may help distinguish pet allergy from a cold, asthma or another indoor allergen. Testing can be useful when symptoms continue despite practical changes, or when you need to identify which animal is triggering them.

Start by keeping the animal out of bedrooms and off upholstered furniture, washing hands after contact, and cleaning surfaces where allergens collect. Regular ventilation and cleaning may help, although disturbing dust can briefly worsen symptoms. Someone who is not allergic can handle grooming and bedding when possible.

Allergy medication may include an antihistamine for sneezing and itching, a nasal spray for nose inflammation, or eye drops for irritated eyes.
