What are the treatment options for marionette lines?

Marionette lines run from the corners of the mouth toward the chin. They may become more visible as skin loses elasticity, facial volume shifts and repeated movement creates a fold. The crease can also be influenced by the shape of the lower face, jowling and the way nearby tissues support the mouth.

Dermal fillers add volume beneath selected areas and may soften a fold or support surrounding structure. A thread lift places dissolvable threads under the skin to provide temporary lift and tissue support. Neither approach suits every face, and treating the line directly is not always the most balanced plan.

Choose a qualified medical practitioner who can assess facial movement, symmetry, skin quality and dental or jaw factors. Ask for a conservative plan that preserves natural expression. Discuss the product or thread material, placement, expected swelling or bruising, aftercare and what happens if you dislike the result.

Avoid treatment when the skin is infected or inflamed, and disclose allergies, previous filler, autoimmune conditions, dental procedures, pregnancy and medicines that affect bleeding. Sun protection and moisturising support skin quality but do not replace a procedure when a structural fold is the concern.

Have a sudden change around the mouth assessed, especially if it occurs with weakness, numbness, speech difficulty or severe pain. After filler or a thread lift, seek urgent medical help for severe or increasing pain, pale or dusky skin, vision changes, marked swelling, fever or pus.

Ask whether the fold is mainly caused by volume loss, skin laxity or movement, which option addresses that cause, and whether another area should be supported instead. Clarify practitioner experience, aftercare, warning signs and the plan for follow-up.
