What are the treatment options for Lynch syndrome?

Lynch syndrome is an inherited tendency that can raise the chance of certain cancers. It is not removed by a single procedure. Care focuses on confirming the inherited change, identifying cancers early, and discussing ways to reduce risk. A genetic counsellor can explain what a test may show, how results may affect relatives, and which screening plan fits your history.

Colonoscopy allows a clinician to inspect the bowel lining and remove some abnormal growths during the procedure. The timing of repeat examinations is personalised according to the gene involved, previous findings, age, and family history.

Start with a specialist assessment if Lynch syndrome is suspected or already identified. Ask whether a hereditary cancer panel test is appropriate and how the result would change screening for you and close relatives. Keep a written record of previous polyps, cancers, operations, and family diagnoses. Attend planned colonoscopy appointments even when you feel well, because screening is intended to find changes before symptoms appear.

If testing identifies a cancer, treatment depends on its location, stage, tumour features, and your general health. Your oncology team may combine surgery, medicines, or radiation when indicated.

Contact your clinician promptly for blood in the stool, a persistent change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, ongoing abdominal pain, or unusual tiredness. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, or inability to pass stool or gas. These symptoms need assessment; they do not by themselves establish cancer.
