What are the treatment options for Li-Fraumeni syndrome?

Li-Fraumeni syndrome is an inherited condition associated with a higher chance of developing certain cancers. It does not mean that a person has cancer now. The management plan aims to find cancer early and to help relatives understand their own options.

Genetic counselling explains the genetic result, possible inheritance within a family, testing choices and the limits of testing. MRI scans can examine body areas without ionising radiation and may be scheduled as part of an individual surveillance plan. The exact scans, timing and specialist appointments depend on age, personal history and family history.

Ask a genetics team to review the laboratory report and draw a family history covering cancers, diagnoses and ages at diagnosis. Keep surveillance appointments and report a new lump, persistent pain, unexplained bleeding, ongoing headaches or another unusual change rather than waiting for the next planned scan.

Tell each clinician about the syndrome before investigations or treatment are planned. If cancer is diagnosed, treatment is selected for that cancer; the genetics team can help the oncology team consider the wider history and discuss options with relatives.

Contact your clinician promptly about a new or growing lump, unexplained weight change, persistent pain, unusual bleeding, a lasting change in bowel or bladder habits, or neurological symptoms. Seek emergency care for sudden weakness, severe breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding or a rapidly worsening condition.
