What are the treatment options for heat rash?

Short answer
Treatment options for heat rash include cooling the skin, reducing sweating and friction, and using selected soothing or anti-inflammatory products.

Why heat rash appears
Heat rash, also called prickly heat, develops when blocked sweat ducts trap sweat near the surface of the skin. Small red bumps, prickling, itching, or tiny blisters may occur, especially in skin folds or under clothing. Babies, people in hot humid conditions, and anyone exposed to heat or heavy sweating can be affected.
Cooling and soothing the skin
Move to a cooler place, loosen or remove damp clothing, and keep the affected area dry and gently clean. Choose breathable clothing and avoid heavy creams, oily products, vigorous rubbing, and activities that cause more sweating until the rash settles. A light moisturiser may soothe dryness; [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) can be discussed if the skin is irritated. For significant itch or inflammation, a clinician may recommend a short course of [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/), with extra care on the face, folds, and in children. [Heat Rash](/conditions/heat-rash/) provides further condition information.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review if the rash does not improve after cooling measures, keeps returning, or is difficult to distinguish from eczema or infection. Seek prompt care for fever, pus, increasing warmth, marked pain, spreading redness, breathing trouble, confusion, or signs of heat illness.
Questions for your doctor
Does this look like heat rash or another condition? Which products are suitable for this body area and age? What should I change about clothing, exercise, or work in hot conditions to prevent another flare?
