What are the treatment options for food poisoning?

Short answer

Treatment for food poisoning mainly replaces lost fluids and salts, while medical care addresses dehydration or severe symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What treatment means

Food poisoning can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fever. Many cases improve with supportive care, but repeated fluid loss can make dehydration develop quickly, particularly in young children, older adults, and people with other health conditions.

A GP Consultation can help assess hydration, symptoms, recent foods, travel, and medicines. Antibiotics are not suitable for every cause, so treatment depends on the clinical picture rather than the label alone.

What you can do

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution. Oral Rehydration Therapy replaces fluid together with salts and may be easier to tolerate than a large drink after vomiting. Rest, and return gradually to simple foods as your appetite comes back.

Avoid preparing food for other people while you have active vomiting or diarrhoea, and wash hands carefully after using the toilet. If you cannot keep fluids down or become markedly weak, a clinic may recommend IV Fluid Therapy.

When to seek care

Seek medical advice for blood in the stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, high fever, confusion, very little urine, or symptoms that are not settling. Urgent care is needed for fainting, severe drowsiness, difficulty breathing, or signs of significant dehydration.

Questions for your doctor

Ask how much and how often to drink, whether an oral rehydration product is appropriate, which medicines to avoid, and what signs mean you need urgent assessment. Mention recent travel, shared meals, pregnancy, or vulnerable household members.

Questions people ask

Is water enough for food poisoning?

Water helps, but vomiting and diarrhoea also remove salts. An oral rehydration solution may provide a more suitable balance when fluid loss is ongoing.

When might IV fluids be used?

IV fluids may be considered when dehydration is significant or you cannot drink enough because of ongoing vomiting or severe illness.
