What are the treatment options for endometrial polyps?

Endometrial polyps are growths from the lining of the uterus. They can be linked with bleeding between periods, heavier periods or bleeding after menopause, although some cause no symptoms. An ultrasound or diagnostic hysteroscopy may help clarify their location and appearance.

A small polyp without concerning features may be watched with follow-up. Removal is more likely to be discussed when bleeding continues, a polyp affects fertility, it is large or changing, or tissue needs examination in the laboratory.

Discuss whether observation fits your symptoms and pregnancy plans. If removal is recommended, hysteroscopic polypectomy allows the clinician to pass instruments through the vagina and cervix to remove the polyp from inside the uterus. The tissue is usually sent for examination.

Before a procedure, ask about bleeding, infection, anaesthesia, recovery and whether another scan or hysteroscopy is needed. Keep a record of bleeding dates and any pain to help guide the decision.

Arrange a clinical review for bleeding between periods, unusually heavy bleeding, bleeding after menopause or difficulty conceiving. Seek urgent help for soaking bleeding with weakness or faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever or feeling acutely unwell.
