What are the treatment options for cutaneous lupus?

Cutaneous lupus is an autoimmune condition that can cause persistent plaques, scaly patches, colour change or scarring on sun-exposed and other skin. Its appearance and activity vary between people. Treatment is selected according to the subtype, body site, inflammation, scarring risk and whether symptoms outside the skin need assessment.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, protective clothing and shade because ultraviolet exposure can aggravate skin lupus. Arrange review for a new, enlarging, painful, crusted or bleeding lesion, or when a patch is leaving a scar or lasting colour change. Seek prompt medical advice for new joint pain, marked fatigue, mouth ulcers, chest symptoms or other concerns beyond the skin. Report significant irritation or worsening after a prescribed cream.
