Short answer

Treatment options for bone cancer may include tumour removal surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, arranged around the tumour's type and location.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What each treatment does

Tumour Removal Surgery aims to remove the cancer while preserving as much function as possible; reconstruction may be considered when bone or a nearby joint is affected. Chemotherapy uses medicines throughout the body and may be given before or after an operation, depending on the tumour type. Radiotherapy uses focused radiation and may be useful when surgery is not suitable, when cancer cells remain a concern, or to ease symptoms. A specialist sarcoma team usually coordinates the plan.

What to do next

Ask which type of bone cancer is present, where it is located and whether scans show spread. Discuss how treatment could affect movement, strength, work and daily activities. Before surgery, ask about reconstruction and rehabilitation; before chemotherapy or Radiotherapy, ask how side effects will be managed. Bring imaging reports and a list of medicines to the specialist appointment.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help after a sudden increase in bone pain, a new inability to bear weight, or an injury followed by severe pain, because a weakened bone may need assessment. During treatment, report fever, uncontrolled pain, new weakness or breathing problems without delay.

Questions for your doctor

What type of bone cancer do I have? Can it be removed while preserving function? Will chemotherapy come before surgery? Could radiotherapy help control the tumour or symptoms? What rehabilitation and mobility support will I receive?

Questions people ask

Can bone cancer be treated without surgery?

Sometimes. The plan may include chemotherapy or radiotherapy when surgery is not suitable, although the decision depends on the tumour and overall health.

Why might chemotherapy be given before surgery?

It may be used to treat cancer cells beyond the visible tumour and to help the team plan subsequent treatment.
