What are the treatment options for Achilles tendon rupture?

Short answer
Treatment options for Achilles tendon rupture include protected immobilisation in a walking boot, surgical Achilles tendon repair and structured rehabilitation afterwards.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the decision is made
A rupture is a tear through some or all of the Achilles tendon, often causing sudden pain, swelling and difficulty pushing off. Assessment may include an examination and imaging when needed. The location and extent of the tear, skin condition, general health, activity goals and time since injury all influence the choice.
Non-operative care uses a walking boot to hold the ankle in a protective position while the tendon ends heal. Surgical repair joins the torn tendon and is followed by protection and gradual movement. Neither pathway is complete without rehabilitation: calf strength, ankle movement, balance and walking control are rebuilt in stages.
What to do after the injury
Stop running and jumping, avoid forceful stretching, and arrange prompt orthopaedic assessment. Keep the ankle protected as advised and use the walking aid or boot instructions provided. Do not change the boot position or begin calf exercises without guidance. If repair is chosen, postoperative rehabilitation helps coordinate wound care, mobility, loading and return to activity.
When urgent review is needed
Seek urgent care after a new snap or pop, sudden loss of push-off, rapidly increasing swelling, numb or blue toes, severe calf pain, chest pain or breathlessness. After treatment, fever, spreading redness, wound discharge, worsening pain or a sudden change in function should be assessed promptly.
Questions for your doctor
Where is the tear and how complete is it? Am I a candidate for boot treatment or repair? How will my ankle be protected, when can I bear weight, and what milestones will guide rehabilitation?

Questions people ask
Does every Achilles rupture need surgery?
No. Some ruptures can be managed with protected boot treatment and rehabilitation; the appropriate route depends on the injury and your circumstances.
Why is rehabilitation needed after a boot or repair?
It restores ankle movement, calf strength, balance and controlled push-off while the tendon adapts to increasing load.
