What are the symptoms of trigger finger?

The palm may feel sore at the base of the affected digit, especially when you press on it or grip something. The finger may feel stiff after rest and then click as it moves. Some people notice a catching sensation, while others find that the digit becomes stuck in a bent position and needs gentle help to straighten. Symptoms can build gradually and may be more noticeable in the morning.

Trigger finger is also called stenosing tenosynovitis. The tendon and its surrounding tunnel become less able to glide freely, so movement feels rough or interrupted. Reduce activities that repeatedly forceful-grip, pinch or vibrate the hand, and keep track of which digit catches and when. An assessment is useful when pain, locking or reduced hand function persists. [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) may limit irritating movement.

Book a clinical review if the finger repeatedly locks, pain limits ordinary tasks, or you cannot fully bend or straighten it. Seek prompt care if the digit becomes suddenly deformed, markedly swollen, red and hot, or numb after an injury.
