What are the symptoms of spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis happens when one spinal bone shifts in relation to the bone below it. Symptoms can stay around the lower back or involve a nerve, producing burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the buttock or leg. Standing, walking, bending, or extending the back may aggravate discomfort. Tight hamstrings and reduced ease of movement can also occur. These features overlap with other back problems, including sciatica and spinal stenosis, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause.

Arrange an assessment if pain persists, limits walking, or keeps returning. A clinician may check spinal movement, leg strength, sensation, and reflexes, then decide whether imaging is useful. Until assessed, change positions regularly, avoid activities that clearly trigger leg pain, and keep gentle movement within comfortable limits. Physiotherapy may address trunk control, flexibility, and movement habits; exercise therapy is commonly tailored to symptoms and examination findings.

Seek urgent medical help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genital area, rapidly worsening leg weakness, or severe pain after a significant injury. Prompt review is also sensible when pain, numbness, or weakness is steadily worsening or walking becomes unsafe.
