What are the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis?

On the scalp, you may notice loose white flakes or thicker yellowish scale, with itching and an oily feel. Redness can appear around the eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, eyelids, beard area or upper chest. The skin may feel irritated, dry in some places and greasy in others. Symptoms can come and go, and may become more noticeable during stressful periods or in cooler weather. Dandruff is a milder scalp presentation; seborrheic dermatitis can also affect facial skin.

Use gentle cleansing and avoid scratching, which can worsen irritation. A clinician may recommend a medicated shampoo or cream, including topical antifungal treatment, when yeast on the skin contributes to scaling. A short, carefully directed course of topical corticosteroids may be considered for marked inflammation. Follow the product directions and keep products away from the eyes. Note where the rash appears, whether it is oily or dry, and what seems to trigger a flare.

Arrange a medical assessment if the rash is painful, spreading, oozing, crusting, or affecting the eyelids, or if symptoms do not settle with gentle care. Seek prompt advice when scalp scaling is accompanied by hair loss or broken skin. Several conditions can resemble seborrheic dermatitis, so a persistent or unusual rash needs an examination rather than self-diagnosis.
