What are the symptoms of pseudogout?

The joint can become very tender, tense, and difficult to move. Symptoms may start quickly and can make ordinary weight-bearing or hand use difficult. Pseudogout is linked with calcium pyrophosphate crystals inside a joint, but symptoms overlap with gout, infection, injury, and other inflammatory conditions. Some people have crystal deposits without an acute attack. A hot, red, swollen joint should therefore be assessed rather than self-diagnosed.

Rest the affected joint in a comfortable position and avoid forcing movement. Arrange medical advice promptly, especially if this is a first episode. A clinician may examine the joint, review medicines and health conditions, and take joint fluid for testing through Joint Aspiration. Treatment can involve Anti-Inflammatory Medication or, in selected cases, a Cortisone Injection after infection has been considered.

Seek urgent medical assessment for a suddenly painful hot or swollen joint, particularly with fever, chills, feeling faint, a wound near the joint, or inability to use the limb. Infection can look similar and needs rapid treatment. Emergency help is appropriate if severe symptoms develop with confusion, collapse, or breathing difficulty.
