What are the symptoms of pneumonia?

A lung infection may cause a new or worsening cough, sometimes with yellow or green phlegm. Fever and chills can occur together, while breathing may feel faster, harder or more uncomfortable than usual. Chest pain can worsen when taking a deep breath or coughing. Some people feel very tired, weak or confused, especially when they are older or already unwell. Symptoms may begin suddenly or build over several days.

Arrange a medical assessment if you have a persistent cough with fever, breathlessness or chest discomfort. A clinician may listen to your lungs and decide whether further checks are needed. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and follow prescribed treatment instructions. Do not rely on the colour of phlegm alone to decide whether you need care.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or coughing up blood. Worsening weakness or inability to keep fluids down also needs prompt attention. A serious infection can sometimes spread beyond the lungs and lead to sepsis.
