What are the symptoms of mumps?

Swelling of the salivary glands can make the face look fuller around one or both cheeks. Chewing, swallowing or opening the mouth may hurt. Some people have reduced appetite, nausea or a dry mouth, while others have mild symptoms or none. The illness can be confused with other infections, so symptoms alone cannot confirm Mumps.

In people with testicles, inflammation may cause Testicular Pain or swelling. Less commonly, mumps can affect other organs, including the brain or the coverings around it. A person can spread infection before and after the glands become swollen, so mention possible exposure when arranging care.

Stay home from school, work and group settings while unwell, avoid sharing cups or utensils, and improve hand hygiene. Drink fluids and choose soft foods if chewing hurts. Contact a GP Consultation service before attending in person so the practice can advise on infection precautions. Check whether MMR Vaccination is up to date rather than trying to diagnose yourself.

Seek urgent care for severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, confusion, a seizure, difficulty breathing, dehydration, or sudden severe testicular pain. A child who is unusually sleepy or difficult to wake needs prompt assessment. Call ahead if mumps is suspected, because waiting areas may expose other people.
