What are the symptoms of lichen sclerosus?

Lichen sclerosus usually affects the skin around the vulva and anus rather than the inside of the vagina. It can cause persistent itching, burning or vulval pain. The skin may look pale or white, feel tight or crinkled, and split or bruise easily.

Over time, inflammation and scarring can alter the shape of the vulval tissues. The vaginal opening may feel narrower, making sex uncomfortable. Some people have soreness when passing urine if urine touches broken skin. Symptoms can flare and settle, so a quieter period does not rule out the condition.

Arrange an examination if you notice ongoing itch, white patches or skin splitting. Use gentle, fragrance-free washing and avoid scratching, perfumed products and tight clothing. Treatment commonly involves a prescribed topical steroid applied in a planned schedule; topical corticosteroids or topical steroid treatment for vulval skin may be discussed with you.

Seek assessment for a new vulval rash, persistent soreness or any change that does not heal. Contact a clinician promptly for a lump, an ulcer, repeated bleeding, a thickened area or a wound that continues despite treatment. These changes need examination rather than self-treatment.
