What are the symptoms of glandular fever?

Many people feel generally unwell before the more recognisable symptoms develop. The throat may be very sore, and glands in the neck can become tender and enlarged. Fever and night sweats may occur. Fatigue can be much stronger than ordinary tiredness and may continue after the throat and fever improve. Some people have mild symptoms or no obvious symptoms, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the infection.

Rest, drink regularly and choose easy-to-swallow foods if your throat hurts. Avoid strenuous activity while you are unwell, particularly if a clinician has advised caution about your spleen. Arrange an assessment if symptoms are significant, persistent or affecting daily activities; testing may help distinguish glandular fever from other throat infections. Do not share drinks or utensils while ill.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe abdominal pain, fainting, confusion or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly for worsening symptoms, prolonged fever, marked weakness or dehydration. A clinician can examine your throat and glands and decide whether testing or monitoring is appropriate.
