What are the symptoms of genital herpes?

Blisters may break and leave shallow sores on the penis, vulva, vagina, cervix, anus or nearby skin. An outbreak can also cause tingling, soreness, painful urination, unusual discharge or swollen glands in the groin. Some people have mild symptoms that resemble other skin conditions, while others notice no symptoms. A symptom pattern cannot confirm genital herpes, and symptoms may recur after the first episode.

Avoid sexual contact while sores, blisters or warning tingling are present, and use protection while discussing ongoing risk with a clinician. Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose clothing, and avoid picking at sores. Arrange a GP Consultation or STI Screening if you have new sores, a partner with symptoms, or concern after sexual contact. A clinician can explain testing and treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe pain, difficulty passing urine, extensive sores, fever, or symptoms during pregnancy. Urgent assessment is also needed if eye pain or a rash near the eye develops. Do not wait for sores to heal before seeking advice if symptoms are new, because examination may help identify the cause and guide testing.
