What are the symptoms of folliculitis?

Because folliculitis starts around hair follicles, each spot may have a hair in its centre. The bumps can be tiny and uniform or larger and sore. They may itch, sting, burn, or feel tender when clothing rubs against them. Common sites include the beard area, scalp, chest, back, buttocks, thighs and areas exposed to shaving, friction or sweating. Folliculitis can be linked to bacteria, yeast, irritation or blocked follicles. The appearance and symptoms help guide treatment, but a clinician may need to inspect the area when the rash persists or returns.

Pause shaving, waxing and picking over the affected skin while it settles. Wash gently, shower after heavy sweating, change damp clothing, and avoid tight fabrics or shared towels.
