What are the symptoms of atrial fibrillation?

Palpitations can feel like fluttering, pounding or a racing heartbeat. The pulse may feel uneven, with beats that seem to change in timing. Reduced exercise tolerance, tiredness and breathlessness can occur because the heart rhythm is less coordinated. Dizziness or fainting can happen when blood flow to the brain is temporarily reduced. Symptoms may start suddenly, settle, and return later, or remain present. Symptoms alone cannot confirm atrial fibrillation; an ECG or another rhythm assessment is needed.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new irregular heartbeat, repeated palpitations, unexplained breathlessness or fainting. Note when episodes begin, how long they last, your pulse pattern if you can check it safely, and any medicines or stimulants involved. If atrial fibrillation is diagnosed, take prescribed medicines as directed. Anticoagulation management may be discussed to reduce clot-related risk; never stop it without advice.

Call emergency services for chest pain, severe breathlessness, collapse, fainting with ongoing symptoms, or sudden facial weakness, arm weakness, speech difficulty, confusion or vision change.
