What Are the Symptoms of Asteatotic Eczema?

Asteatotic eczema commonly causes very dry, scaly, cracked skin with itching, redness, and fine lines that can resemble cracked porcelain. The affected area may feel tight, rough, tender, or stinging, especially after bathing or when the skin is stretched. It often appears on the lower legs, but other areas can be involved.

Asteatotic eczema is associated with loss of the skin's protective oils and moisture. The surface becomes visibly dry and flaky, with shallow cracks forming a network of lines. The skin may look pink, red, purple, or darker than the surrounding area, depending on your natural skin tone and the degree of inflammation. Itch can be mild or intense and may lead to scratching, which can increase irritation and create small raw areas.

Symptoms can be more noticeable in colder, drier months or in rooms with dry heated air. Frequent hot showers, strong soaps, and vigorous rubbing may make tightness and scaling worse. Symptoms can settle and then return when the skin barrier becomes dry again.

Use a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser or ointment regularly, especially soon after a short lukewarm wash. Apply enough to leave the skin comfortable rather than tight, and reapply whenever dryness returns. Gentle cleansers can reduce the stripping effect of soap. Pat the skin dry instead of rubbing, and avoid picking at flakes or cracks.

Loose, breathable clothing may reduce friction over irritated areas. A clinician can check whether the pattern fits asteatotic eczema and recommend an appropriate anti-inflammatory treatment when moisturising alone does not control the itch or redness.

Arrange a dermatology or primary-care assessment if the dryness and cracking persist, keep returning, spread beyond the original area, or interfere with sleep. Seek prompt care if cracks become increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or ooze fluid, or if you develop a fever. These changes can indicate infection or another skin condition that needs different treatment.

Get urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, severe pain, or feeling seriously unwell. Do not assume every itchy, cracked rash is asteatotic eczema; psoriasis, contact dermatitis, fungal infection, and other conditions can look similar.
