Short answer

Anovulation may cause irregular or absent periods, changes in bleeding, and difficulty getting pregnant, although some people have no obvious symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What anovulation can look like

When ovulation does not occur, the usual cycle changes that follow egg release may not happen. Periods can arrive unpredictably, be unusually light or heavy, or stop for a time. Some people notice fewer typical premenstrual changes or no clear mid-cycle signs. Anovulation can also make conception difficult because there is no egg available for fertilisation in that cycle.

A missed period has many possible explanations, including pregnancy, stress, changes in weight or exercise, polycystic ovary syndrome, thyroid problems, and hormone conditions such as hyperprolactinaemia or hypothalamic amenorrhoea. The symptom pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

What to do next

Track bleeding dates, cycle changes, medicines, major stress, exercise, and symptoms. If periods are repeatedly irregular, absent, or you are trying to conceive, arrange a gynaecology assessment. Evaluation may include a pregnancy test, blood tests, and an ultrasound, depending on your history. Treatment addresses the underlying reason; options may include care for polycystic ovary syndrome or fertility support. Read more about Anovulation and Female Infertility.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical advice for persistent absence of periods, very heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, fainting, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. These features need assessment because they can reflect problems other than anovulation. A clinician can also assess possible Premature Ovarian Insufficiency when cycle loss begins earlier than expected.

Questions for your doctor

Could pregnancy, medication, thyroid changes, prolactin, polycystic ovary syndrome, or another hormone issue explain my cycle? How can we check whether ovulation is occurring? Which treatment fits my goal of symptom control or pregnancy?

Questions people ask

Can anovulation happen without symptoms?

Yes. Some people have apparently regular bleeding or few noticeable changes, and ovulation may need testing to confirm.

Does anovulation always cause infertility?

No. It can make conception harder in affected cycles, but the outlook depends on the cause and available treatment.
