What are the symptoms of angioedema?

Angioedema is swelling in deeper layers of tissue, so the affected area may feel tight, warm, firm, or uncomfortable rather than simply itchy. It can appear around the eyes, lips, tongue, face, hands, feet, or genital area. Hives may occur at the same time, although angioedema can happen without visible wheals. When the digestive tract is involved, cramping, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea may develop. Episodes can follow an exposure, a medicine, or another trigger, but recurrent swelling without hives needs careful medical assessment.

Record when the swelling began, which areas changed, recent foods or medicines, and whether hives or breathing symptoms appeared. Do not restart a suspected medicine without medical advice. A clinician may review the episode and discuss antihistamine treatment or oral corticosteroid treatment when appropriate; the choice depends on the pattern and cause. Photographing visible swelling can help if it fades before review.

Get emergency help immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, a tight throat, hoarse voice, trouble swallowing, wheezing, breathing difficulty, dizziness, or faintness. These can signal airway or circulation involvement. Seek prompt medical review for widespread swelling, severe abdominal pain, repeated episodes, or swelling that starts after a new medicine, even if breathing is currently comfortable.
