Short answer

Risk factors for fatty liver disease include obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, abnormal blood fats, alcohol use, limited activity and some medicines or inherited conditions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Often silent
Fatty liver may cause no noticeable symptoms.
Main pattern
Metabolic health and alcohol exposure can both matter.
Assessment
Liver fat does not reveal scarring on its own.

How fatty liver develops

The liver processes nutrients and medicines, but excess fat can accumulate inside liver cells. Metabolic factors such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol and triglycerides can increase this tendency. Fatty liver can occur without obvious symptoms.

Alcohol can also injure liver cells and promote fat storage; risk depends on the amount and pattern of use as well as individual health. Some medicines and inherited disorders are less common contributors. Fat in the liver does not by itself show whether inflammation or scarring is present, so assessment may involve history, examination, blood tests or imaging.

Steps that support liver health

Ask a clinician to review blood glucose, blood pressure, blood fats, alcohol intake and medicines if fatty liver is suspected or already found. Choose gradual, sustainable changes: regular activity, balanced meals, fewer sugary drinks and appropriate management of diabetes or weight.

Avoid starting supplements marketed as liver cleanses without professional advice, because some can harm the liver or interact with medicines. If you drink alcohol, discuss a safer plan; people with alcohol-related liver injury may need specialist support rather than stopping suddenly without guidance.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review for persistent fatigue, upper-right abdominal discomfort, abnormal liver tests or a scan showing liver fat. Seek urgent care for yellow skin or eyes, vomiting blood, black stools, severe confusion, marked abdominal swelling or sudden severe abdominal pain.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What may be driving liver fat in my case? Do I need blood tests or imaging? Are any medicines or supplements affecting my liver? How should I manage diabetes, weight or alcohol? Do I need monitoring for inflammation or scarring?
