What are the first signs of whooping cough?

Whooping cough, also called pertussis, may start like an ordinary cold. The cough can become repeated, forceful, or tiring over time; some people make a whooping sound when breathing in afterwards, while babies may have pauses in breathing rather than a clear whoop. Vomiting after coughing can occur. Early cold symptoms are not specific, so contact with someone infected, vaccination history, age, and the cough pattern help a clinician judge the possibility.

Contact a clinician early if a cough is worsening, occurs in bouts, or follows contact with whooping cough. Keep the person hydrated, allow rest, and reduce exposure to smoke or other irritants. Avoid sharing cups and close face-to-face contact, especially with babies and pregnant people. Antibiotic Treatment may be offered to reduce spread or help in selected circumstances; it is not a reason to delay assessment.

Seek emergency help for blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or unusual limpness. Babies, young children, and people with breathing or immune problems need prompt assessment for a persistent or spasmodic cough. A cough that prevents drinking or causes repeated vomiting also warrants medical advice.

Ask whether the cough pattern needs testing, whether treatment could reduce transmission, and how long to stay away from school, work, or vulnerable household members. Check whether household contacts need advice and whether Childhood Immunisation is up to date.
