What are the first signs of thyroid cancer?

Most neck lumps are not thyroid cancer. A lump may be a thyroid nodule, an enlarged lymph node, a cyst, or another benign change. Thyroid cancer can be quiet and may be found during an examination or scan done for another reason. Hoarseness or swallowing trouble can occur when a growth presses on nearby structures, but these symptoms also have many other causes.

Assessment commonly includes a neck examination, thyroid blood tests, ultrasound, and sometimes a needle sample. These tests help show whether a nodule needs observation or further treatment.

Arrange a medical review for a new, enlarging, firm, or persistent neck lump. Record changes in size, tenderness, voice, swallowing, and breathing, and bring any previous scan reports. Treatment, when needed, may include thyroid removal surgery, radioactive iodine therapy, targeted therapy, or structured follow-up after treatment.

Seek urgent help if a neck swelling causes difficulty breathing, rapidly worsens, or prevents swallowing fluids. New severe voice change with breathing problems also needs prompt assessment because the airway may be affected.

Ask whether the lump is in the thyroid or a lymph node, what the ultrasound shows, and whether a needle sample is recommended. Ask how thyroid function will be monitored and which changes should bring you back sooner.
