What are the first signs of shingles?

Shingles happens when the chickenpox virus becomes active again in a nerve. Early discomfort can feel like sensitive skin, pins and needles, deep aching, or a strip of burning on one side of the face or body. Some people feel tired, feverish, or headachy before seeing a skin change.

Seek urgent medical advice if the rash is near an eye, on the nose, inside the ear, or associated with facial weakness, because nearby nerves may be affected.
