What Are the First Signs of Seborrheic Dermatitis?

The scalp may develop loose flakes, an itchy patch, or scale that feels oily rather than dry. Around the eyebrows, eyelids, nose, ears, or beard area, skin can look pink, irritated, or slightly greasy. Symptoms may fluctuate and can be more noticeable when the skin barrier is irritated.

Seborrheic dermatitis is different from ordinary Dandruff, although the two can overlap. Psoriasis, eczema, and contact reactions can also affect these areas. A clinician uses the pattern and skin examination to distinguish them.

Wash affected skin gently, rinse thoroughly, and avoid vigorous scratching or scraping. Do not apply strong steroid products to the face or ears without medical guidance. Note which areas are involved and whether products, sweat, or weather changes seem to aggravate symptoms.
