What Are the First Signs of Sciatica?

Sciatica describes irritation or compression affecting part of the sciatic nerve pathway. Pain may travel down the buttock and back of the thigh, sometimes reaching the calf or foot. It can feel burning, electric, shooting, or aching and may change with sitting, bending, coughing, or sneezing. Tingling or numbness can occur in the leg or foot, and some people notice that the leg feels less reliable. Pain in the back alone is not necessarily sciatica, and several conditions can cause similar symptoms.

Keep changing position and continue light activity that does not increase leg symptoms. Avoid prolonged bed rest and pause heavy lifting or repeated bending while the pain is irritable. Write down where the pain travels and whether you notice altered sensation or weakness. A clinician can assess nerve function and may recommend physiotherapy, exercise therapy, or medication according to the cause and severity.

Seek urgent medical care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the genitals or inner thighs, or rapidly worsening weakness in a leg. Prompt assessment is also needed with fever, unexplained weight loss, major trauma, or severe pain that is constant and not easing. Otherwise, arrange a review if symptoms persist, spread, or limit normal walking and sleep.
