What Are the First Signs of Scabies?

Itching may begin before the rash is easy to see. Common sites include the finger webs, wrists, elbows, waist, buttocks, nipples, genitals, and areas covered by jewellery or clothing. Scratching can create excoriations and crusts, which may obscure the original pattern.

Scabies is caused by mites in the skin and can spread through prolonged close skin contact. If several people in a household or close-contact group develop an itchy rash around the same time, tell the clinician. The rash can resemble eczema or another infestation, so symptoms alone do not confirm it.

Arrange a GP Consultation or dermatology assessment, especially when itching is severe or contacts are affected. Avoid sharing towels, clothes, or bedding until you have received advice. Do not rely on ordinary moisturiser or household insect products to treat suspected scabies.

Scabies Treatment is prescribed or recommended according to the person and situation. Close contacts may need coordinated advice, and laundering or isolating recently used fabrics may form part of the plan. Follow the instructions carefully and report persistent itch after treatment.

Seek prompt care for widespread crusting, pus, fever, rapidly worsening soreness, or skin that becomes hot and swollen, as scratching can allow a bacterial infection. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity should obtain medical advice early.
