What are the first signs of kidney infection?

A kidney infection can develop when bacteria travel upward from the bladder. Early symptoms may combine urinary changes, such as burning or needing to urinate often, with pain in the flank or lower back. Fever, chills, nausea, vomiting and marked tiredness suggest the illness is affecting the whole body rather than remaining limited to the bladder.

A urinary tract infection can sometimes involve the kidneys, but symptoms overlap with kidney stones and other conditions. The combination of fever and flank pain deserves prompt clinical attention.

Contact a clinician promptly if you have urinary symptoms with fever, chills, flank pain, vomiting, or a noticeable change in urine. Assessment may include a urine sample and other checks to guide treatment. Drink fluids if you can keep them down, but do not delay care while trying home measures.

If a kidney infection is diagnosed, antibiotic treatment is commonly used according to the clinician’s assessment. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and report worsening symptoms or difficulty keeping it down.

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, severe flank pain, or rapidly worsening fever and chills. Pregnancy, childhood, older age, kidney disease or a weakened immune system can make prompt assessment especially important.
