Short answer

The first signs of keratosis pilaris are clusters of tiny rough bumps around hair follicles, often on the outer upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What early keratosis pilaris feels like

The bumps are caused by keratin collecting around follicle openings. They may feel like fine sandpaper or gooseflesh and can be skin-coloured, pink, or red, especially when the skin is dry or irritated. Early keratosis pilaris is often more noticeable by touch than sight and is usually not painful. A few inflamed follicles can itch or resemble ingrown hairs, but pus, warmth, marked tenderness, or rapidly spreading redness suggests another problem. The pattern commonly affects matching areas on both sides of the body.

How to care for early bumps

Use a gentle cleanser and apply an emollient after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp. Avoid harsh scrubs, picking, and very hot water, which can increase redness. If the texture persists, a clinician may recommend an exfoliating moisturiser, topical retinoid, or another targeted product. Chemical peels or laser hair removal are not first steps for every person and should be considered only after the diagnosis and skin sensitivity are reviewed.

When to seek care

Seek advice if bumps become painful, pus-filled, hot, suddenly widespread, or very itchy, or if the appearance changes quickly. A review is also useful when home care has not helped or when you are unsure whether the bumps are acne, folliculitis, ingrown hairs, or keratosis pilaris.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bumps fit keratosis pilaris, which moisturising ingredients suit your skin, and how often to use a prescribed exfoliant or retinoid without causing irritation.

Questions people ask

Is keratosis pilaris usually painful?

No. It is commonly rough rather than painful, although dryness or inflammation can cause itch, redness, or sensitivity.

Can scrubbing remove the bumps?

Forceful scrubbing can worsen irritation. Gentle cleansing and consistent moisturising are generally kinder to the follicle openings.
